About The Global Medical Research Fund:
This fund was began by Tom Nichols, Nora Haseltine, and Donna Elkins. The story behind its founding is straightforward. My mother Betty was diagnosed with cervical cancer in late 2004, and in October 2005 she passed away as the cancer spread throughout her body.
During this time Tom and his wife, and Betty's grandson and his wife all joined together to take care of her. The financial burden combined with the emotional stress only made matters worse as they went from one day to the next, and the financial burden only worsened when Tom lost his job due to absenteeism as he had no choice, but to go to the hospital when emergencies came up (and they came up often).
These burdens nearly drove our family into bankruptcy...since then we have witnessed even more death as others around us have passed away due to diseases which are curable.
It was at this time when I began thinking about, and asking myself...What can be done?
It occurred to me that my family had gone through an ordeal which thousands of families must go through each year....What can be done?
I knew that there are potential cures for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, blindness, hearing loss, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, kidney and liver disease, and this is just the tip of the iceberg! I discussed the idea of forming a non-profit with Nora Haseltine which would have the purpose of raising money for research and education. It didn't take much---she had also lost a loved one recently, and her compassion for other people motivated her to join our effort!
Donna Elkins joined us in December of 2007, and we now had the three people required under law to form a non-profit. Donna shares many of the attributes as Nora -- compassion and professionalism.
Currently the two most promising research fields are embryonic, umbilical cord, and genetic research, and these are the avenues we are pursuing.
